OK, I want to know what was your favorite band that you discovered by watching the Headbangers ball. I know alot of you like myself grew up in small towns where nothing was played on the local radio stations outside of mainstream and HBB was a "source" to discover new bands. I have to say my favorite band that I discovered through HBB was Dangerous Toys. The first time I saw the video to Tease N' Please N' I was blown away, and video to Scared made me an even bigger fan. I would give an honorable mention to Damien. So who was your favorite band that you discovered by watching the HBB?

I grew up in San Diego California so being a big city I had access to Rock Radio and saw older peoples Cd and tape collections and saw things at used and new record stores and in Magazines. But still there were lots of bands I discovered from HBB or got into because they hosted or were interviewed on or I realy liked there videos and songs.
Some examples are Suicidal Tendencies,Megadeth and Pantera. Many bands were on Dial Mtv at the time also and hard 30 or hard 60 when they had those.
Also I Before the Seattle bands were all over MtV they were guest oh HBB many of them.

I grew up in eastern Kentucky and the only true rock radio station we had was out of Charleston, WV. They played alot of the mainstream stuff - Def Leppard, Van Halen , Tesla, G'N'R etc. , But you never heard bands like Dangerous Toys, Every Mother's Nightmare, Badlands, Damien etc. This is what I loved about HBB at the time it turned me on to good music that I wouldn't have heard otherwise.

I grew up close to NYC so we had a fair share of clubs that supported smaller bands. Plus we had an amazing college radio station, WSOU in South Orange, NJ. They played anything and everything metal, from small obscure bands to the mainstream. Even had shows dedicated to local bands. I don't get it where I live now & I miss it so much. They always took requests, you could call them and ask them to play Outlaw by Dangerous Toys & 1/2 hour later you'll hear it. It was great!

Great question wyldcat! I followed the music scene pretty closely back then so I can't say that much got by me whether I seen them on Headbangers Ball or not. I play guitar and I was in bands back then. I was totally consumed with music in every way. I was always taking it all in. Whether it was through buying all the metal magazines (Metal Edge, Circus, Hit Parader, Kerrang etc.), listening to the radio, talking music with friends that I hung around with. I can't tell you how many times friends would bring me a tape of some band and say "Hey man you should check out this band!" ;D I became a fan of bands like Guns N' Roses, Faster Pussycat and L.A. Guns that way. And then later seen them and their videos on HBB. So, I can't say that I discovered any specific bands from watching Headbangers Ball but I'm sure there are a few that I first seen on HBB or seen their video on HBB and that turned me on to them. I guess it would be more of the underground types of bands like alot of you...you know Dangerous Toys, Dirty Looks, Warrior Soul, Electric Angels, Child's Play etc. those types of bands that never had big huge hit songs. And some of the thrash metal bands like Death Angel and Testament, etc.

I think it was almost a must that all metal heads played or in my case tried to play guitar back in the 80's. Metal just made me want to try and play guitar. I see you mentioned Child's Play...Great band! Remember Salty Dog? I first heard them on HBB when I saw the video for "Lonesome Fool". Ah memories....

HAHA!!! Yeah I think it was required that all metal heads back then had to get a guitar and at least learn the main riffs of "Iron Man" and "Smoke On The Water" LOL!!! Yeah I remember Salty Dog and I thought they were pretty cool too. I always seemed to like alot of the underground bands like them and the video for "Lonesome Fool" was cool, I always thought the end of it was pretty funny LOL!

For me it was LA Guns with their video for "Sex Action" I said to myself "who are these guys!!!!" the look of the band had me hooked, soon after I bought their debut release. I thought Tracii Guns had that cool guitar hero look.

I tried to play but sucked and gave up.But besides Kerrang and Rip.I easily think Guitar World was the best music magazine out there.Know with the internet the only Magazines worth buying are guitar magazines.
