What do you think caused the demise of the old headbangers ball? Was it that music was changing, the suits had their hand in the mix, or that Ricki Rachtman was either loved or hated as a VJ. I personally found ricki at times lost and unsure but it added a realism to the show. Sure, he was a poser and wanna be but it was funny laughing at him when he didnt know what to do or say. I've watched the new headbangers ball and could not get into it. The show got to serious and the new bands have no clue what metal is. Hey man........I would like to know what your singing about.........screaming is cool...........but not thru the whole song!!!
What happened to our music? I guess the next big thing is practicing in their garage jumping off milk crates...........

Me personally, I think it would have come to an end anyway no matter who was hosting Headbangers Ball. I was ok with all of the hosts of the show, it didn't matter to me who hosted it. But everything was changing at the time. Music was changing, the music scene was changing, fans were changing, and yes even the suits were changing and had their hands in it. It's all just numbers to them anyway. After all, it is called the music BUSINESS, business being the more important word to them. So, when the next big thing comes along that is producing some big numbers they jump on it and start signing every band that looks and sounds the same because that's whats on the charts. The same thing happened with our music and it happened with the grunge/alternative scene that followed. And it has been happening for decades really if you think about it. But that's the way it goes I guess, sad but true. I agree with you though. I don't like most of the new metal stuff out there but I'm old school so I am biased on that I guess. But I do like the fact that there are some bands are out there flying the flag for metal even if it's not really my thing. It gives you some hope anyway that not all people buy into Britney Spears, Eminem or Usher or whatever which is a good thing LOL!!! That's my 2 cents on it.

It was rough for a few years but there were other kinds of bands I liked in the late and mid ninetys. Also with the internet things are better then ever know. They also have vh1 classic know that shows plenty of old hbbs.Living in So cal I got to see plenty of cool shows in the late 90 early 2000s.
I was getting older anyways as I graduated highschool in 95 and HBB was not the same in 94 and 95 like it was in the late 80s and early 90s metal was having some downs.
Metallica was not as heavy. Both Maiden and Priest lost there legendary singers. But Pantera was still strong and Black Sabbath Reunions and Kiss ones were about to happen.

I agree with you HBB...you nailed it. MTV is an absolute joke! How anyone can watch that channel today without throwing up is beyond me. Of course I am a dinosaur myself. As far as I am concerned metal died when grunge came along. I am glad that I was around for it's heyday though, there will never be another time in music like that. I was fortunate to get to see HBB when it was "the" show for metal heads like us to watch.

I've read several interview with Rikki over the last 10 or so years. If you do a google search I'm sure you'll have several of them pop up. All the interviews about Headbanger's Ball he always goes on about how he had no say so in the selection of the videos. I always took it that he was trying to slam alot of glam bands that made up a large portion of the show during the late 80's on through 1991. Metal Mania on VH1 Classic is very cool, although it's not the same. But that's for another post.

I never got that of course he does not like some bands. But don't try to hide the fact you liked some glam.He does not have to like it all,But we have seen the metal years hes in it.He co owned a club with a guy who was in a glam band.Glam bands played there.
I think hes right though. In the years 88,89,90 and through part of 91 some of the videos on HBB were by a whole bunch of nobodies or bad bands.Iam talking about the bands that were never on the show and never amounted to anybody.
But they did not know at the time.Did they know that certain bands would be huge and certain ones would not.
Personally I like soft bands like Bon Jovi and Poison,Event the soft Def Leppard. But I enjoy and listened to Metallica,Slayer and Maiden way more.
Thats what was great about HBB it had it all.

It's funny about Ricki, how his look changed throughout the HBB years. when he was in the metal years movie, he had eyeliner on, then on HBB, he grew his hair so long that it looked like a bush, then he jumped on the Biohazard bandwagon. he got a buz cut, died his hair blond, and started wearing flight jackets. he looked just like Biohazard guitarist Billy Grazidea(sp) I met Ricki in 1993 at the Foundations Forum, he came off as a jerk.

I don't think he was a poser.I think he praised way to many bands thats all.I own lots of cds and Like lots of bands but only a few are my favorites. But if your interviewing people going to concerts for free and traveling the world on MTVs dime your gonna kiss some ass,at least I would that would be the best job ever.He got to travel to Asia,All over the US,South America and Europe for concerts and got to interview every one from AC/DC to Van Halen thats pretty cool.
I think Adam curry was a poser, that guy did not know what he was talking about usualy and had to hold cue cards in his interviews.

Hey man its ok if you think RIkki is a poser he has plenty of haters.I just enjoy the job he did.Speaking of posers have you seen the episode when steve stevens is the guest and he tells adam curry that he has a gift for him to give him more credibility so he does not look like such a poser. He then gives him a guitar the look on Adams face is priceless,He totaly has to kiss his ass cause hes on MTV also he just got a guitar but he got called a poser on National TV on his own show. Its classic.

Riki is a poser, but it is his voice that will take me right back to those wonderful Saturday nights when my whole world was metal and nothing but the Ball exsisted for two or three hours.
